With the current COVID-19 pandemic striking many different parts of the country, one lesson many people have learnt is that preparation is key. Things can change at a moment's notice, and having a contingency plan in place can help you avoid last-minute panic.

The same is true when it comes to storage. If you have a storage unit that houses some of your extra items, such items may become essential during a lockdown. This is why you should be prepared to arrange your storage unit for easy access when free movement becomes limited. Here's what you should keep in mind as you work towards this goal.

1.    Stock up on essential supplies in advance

The first step you should take is to have essential supplies stocked inside your home and storage unit before a lockdown order is enforced. Essential supplies include sanitary items, non-perishable foods, bottled water, a first-aid kit, medicine, and personal documents. A storage unit comes in handy for storing items such as extra bottled water, batteries, canned foods, face masks, and wipes.

2.    Proper Arrangement is critical

Simply having these items in your storage unit isn't enough. You should proceed to arrange everything in a manner that's easy to access. One good idea is to install custom shelving in your unit. There are many plastic, wooden, or wire portable shelves that can easily fit in storage units of multiple sizes. These provide enough surface area to neatly arrange your items.

In the absence of shelving, consider using labelled boxes. Plastic and cardboard boxes can be used to house most of the stuff that you might need during a lockdown. Just avoid overstuffing one box, as this can make it harder for you to find what you need.

3.    Have a plan for inventory

After stocking up and arranging your items, you should also develop a plan for keeping track of inventory. Your goal should be to replace items that have been used during the course of a lockdown. Start by creating a list of the essentials and where each item is located. You can use a mobile app to make this process easier or even take pictures of different sections of your storage unit as items run out.

4.    Look for a storage unit that's within easy reach

During a lockdown, it helps to have your items within easy reach. Consider renting a storage unit that's not too far away from your home so you can stock up on essential supplies whenever necessary.
