Creative uses for a self storage space

If you need to house some extra belongings while you're moving or store some inventory for your home business, a self-storage space is a simple and affordable way to do it. But a storage space can be much more than just a place to store old books and dishes. Facing space shortages at home or work, people around the world have turned to storage units as ideal places for other kinds of tasks.

Art studio

For an aspiring artist, space can be a challenge. Painters, sculptors and other creators need space to work, and working from home can often mean being forced to put everything away at the end of a session, or leave it out, at the mercy of children, pets or flatmates. Just set up some dropcloths on the floor, and the storage space becomes a studio where you never have to worry about getting paint on the furniture. This method provides ideal flexibility, too -- artists who need studio space for a specific project can hire a self-storage unit for a short period without having to worry about paying for it when it isn't in use.

Rehearsal space

Musicians face similar challenges to visual artists. Instruments take up lots of space, and family and neighbours might not appreciate being the unwilling audience for rehearsals. As a result, a growing number of bands and solo artists use storage lockers as rehearsal spaces. These affordable units can also double as a convenient place to store instruments, amps, band merchandise and more.

Gym

Fitness enthusiasts who run out of space for their workout equipment at home don't need to relegate their weight benches or exercise bicycles to the garage. A self-storage unit provides easy-to-access space for a simple personal gym. Foam floor mats will help minimise the risk of damage to the equipment and cut down on noise.

Workshop

Modern urban living can limit the space needed for crafts or hobbies. When that model railroad layout threatens to spill beyond the confines of the spare room, or it becomes clear that bicycle maintenance is impossible in a carpeted hallway, a self-storage unit can provide the space needed to spread out tools and materials -- and even to leave them set up if the job isn't done.

Every unconventional use of a storage unit has its own special needs, and would-be rock stars or artists should always talk to their storage provider about what uses are acceptable and what facilities they offer. But with a little creativity, an ordinary storage unit can be home to something much more inspiring than piles of boxes.
