5 Tips for Organising Your Self-Storage Space

When you rent a self-storage unit, it can be tempting to simply shove all the belongings you need to store in there, close the door, and forget about them until you need them. However, this approach is likely to cause you problems in the long run. Use these five top tips to organise your self-storage unit so you can make better use of the space and find your belongings more easily.
1. Rent the Right Size of Unit
Many people rent the smallest self-storage unit they think they can cram their stuff into. However, renting a slightly larger unit can make it easier to organise your stuff and find what you need when the time comes to access it. Larger units are usually only slightly more expensive than small ones, so consider upgrading.
2. Label Everything
When you come back to your self-storage unit after several months, it is unlikely that you will remember where you put everything. Therefore, you should label all boxes so you know what is inside them. If you are using your self-storage unit to manage a home move, label all boxes with the room of the home that the box should be taken to when you retrieve it from the storage unit.
3. Place Most Useful Items Near the Door
Before you pile everything into your storage unit, think about the items you are likely to need to access first or most often. Place these items at the front of the unit, close to the door. That way, you can easily access these items without disturbing the rest of your stuff.
4. Use Vertical Space
Self-storage units have a much higher capacity if you can use vertical space as well as floor space to store your items. One option is to stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones, although you should be careful not to create towers that could fall down and cause injury. Another option is to add shelving to the walls of the unit so you can place boxes and other items onto them.
5. Disassemble Furniture
It is much easier to fit furniture into a self-storage unit if you take it apart. Be sure to keep the instructions for the furniture close at hand if you are not sure how to put it back together. Taking furniture apart also makes it easier to move bulky furniture in and out of the unit.
